Stick Control Techniques To Study Before Attempting To Play Drum Rudiments

If you are a beginning drummer I don’t recommend starting with the drum rudiments. Until you’ve learned some basics about holding the drumsticks and stick control, you’ll be mostly wasting your time practicing the rudiments. Here are some beginning drum lessons I recommend first.

First Drum Rudiments To Learn

It’s also important to learn at least the first few drum rudiments in a particular order. This makes it much easier to learn the rest of the rudiments.

  • The Flam The flam is one of the easiest drum rudiments to learn. It’s also a building block to many other rudiments.
  • The Multiple Bounce Roll (Buzz Roll) The multiple bounce roll is also fairly easy to learn if it’s taught in an effective manner.
  • The Double Stroke Roll The double stroke open roll is a bit more difficult to learn. It takes patience and practice. It’s a good rudiment to start with though, because mastering the ability to execute double strokes is key to learning most of the rest of the drum rudiments.
