Double Stroke Roll For Beginners
The double stroke roll is one of the most important and versatile snare drum rudiments for drumming. It has been my experience that it takes a lot of time to really master. I recommend practicing double strokes daily for 5-10 minutes. Even after you master the double stroke roll, you should incorporate this into your daily warm-ups, just to keep the muscles that you need to use for double stroke rolls in shape.
Your basic grip for this technique, will be the standard matched grip. You can add the traditional grip later, but for beginning students, I recommend waiting on that, until you have a certain amount of mastery with the matched grip. This will help you to become a good, functioning drummer, who is able to play in a band, as quickly as possible.
