Today I’d like to bring to your attention a new drum book written by Steve Forster, called 143 Binary Algorhythms Applied To Paradiddles.
Steve was a student of jazz drumming great, Joe Morello. Along with his fabulous performances with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Morello was widely respected as a drum teacher and author. Some of Joe’s other former students include Danny Gottlieb, Max Weinberg, and Jon Fishman.
In the intro of Steve’s new book, he describes some of his experiences studying with Morello. Joe Morello had very poor vision since birth, and therefore had a very difficult time writing. Because of this, Steve was given the task of transcribing the ideas for Joe’s famous book, Master Studies. He says he learned a great deal about Morello’s thinking in the process.
One of the books Joe used most with his students was Stick Control For The Snare Drummer by George Lawrence Stone. Morello expanded on Stone’s book in endless ways with his students, applying the exercises to the drum-set, adding accents and much more. Many of these became the material for his books Master Studies and Master Studies II.
Steve goes on to explain that many other ideas based on the Stick Control exercises that he and other students of Joe Morello used were never written down. Steve’s book 143 Binary Algorhythms Applied To Paradiddles presents some of these ideas in written form for the first time.
Steve also says the examples in the book will enable the reader to create thousands of interesting and useful exercises of their own.
The book also contains a unique set of 43 exercises based on the well know snare drum rhythm from Ravel’s Bolero. These exercises are helpful in developing control as well as becoming accustomed to a variety of different stickings within a constrained rhythmic format.
143 Binary Algorhythms Applied To Paradiddles is a book for advanced players. If you’ve ever wondered how drummers like Joe Morello played with such apparently effortless speed and technical mastery, the answers are in books like these. Joe spent his entire life studying the fine art of drum technique, and passing his wisdom along to his fortunate students. Steve Forster is a great example of one of these students.
There’s never been a book like this! This is an amazing collection! Steve has covered and presented everything you could ever want in your quest for total development of technical virtuosity. Every serious drummer/percussionist must, and should, invest and explore these unique and creative applications. Great! -Bill Wisch, Amazon.com customer
