This is Vince T. – It looks/seems like you are accenting both the downbeat AND the upbeat’s of each quarter note (In the video)… but is written as only the accent on the quarter not downbeat. Could you please clear up my confusion!? Thank you…
Thanks for your question Vince. The accent is on the downbeats only. The upbeats are not accented. For the upbeats you play a softer note and then lift it back up to the accented position.
Typo “but is written as only the accent on the quarter NOTE downbeat…”
… About the traditional grip ex. – (for whatever this is worth).. A number of years ago when I was attempting to improve my left hand/trad-grip technique; I found a Joe Morello tip on YouTube. He did not explain it in the short clip/just said “do it” ~ What he did was with his left hand/traditional grip was: go/show… (playing ‘air drums’) go: 1e&a 2(hard accent on the 2!) & then do that over and over for awhile as an exercise. I of course assumed this was an exercise to build T-grip chops & still do it at times. – It now occurs to me that this particular ex. Is a way of strengthening the T-grip process in a similar manner as to what our instructor Brad describes in his awesome approach.(!!!?)
That’s interesting. I do know that Joe told my instructor that when your hands are out of shape, the quickest way to get them back into shape was with accent exercises.
One other tip concerning fingers I’d like to mention is that Dave(my teacher) told me Joe would sometimes bump up the metronome faster than Dave was able to play with his wrists. This would force him to use his fingers to keep up.
P/S ~ as I think more about the above described Joe Morello tip, was fortunate enough to find/see… I/myself evolved it into doing the above on my leg/thigh while watching TV, & also on a practice pad. It’s possibly the reason that when I practice the ‘daily dbl stroke workout’ … that I am much better able to keep up with the 32nd note ex at demonstration speeds… ( though needs more work to be totally consistent.) & that is: going 1e&a HARD ACCENT on 2 (in 2/4 time)! Over & over for the exercise…
