Common Myths About Stick Control
If you’ve been playing the drums very long at all, you probably think you simply can’t achieve great stick control without practicing many hours a day. Why? Maybe you’ve already spent a lot of time practicing and you haven’t yet achieved the results you were after. You’ve also probably been told that the drummers who play the best or make the most progress are simply the ones who practice the most hours.
Everyone says if you practice enough exercises or buy enough drum books you’ll have great stick control. But lots of people practice lots of exercises and many hours and don’t get very good results. Why is that? You need to understand how to practice stick control if you want to improve. You need to understand the fundamentals of stick technique so you can practice effectively. Otherwise most of your practice time is just wasted. The important thing is the way you practice stick control, not the number of exercises you practice or how long you practice.
Who Am I?
Just in case you’re new to Brad Allen Drums, I’m a professional drummer based out of Kansas City. Many years ago I began studying the stick control techniques taught in this course with a private teacher named Dave Divis. Dave was a student of jazz great, Joe Morello. Morello was the amazing drummer with The Dave Brubeck Quartet. He was also a highly sought out drum teacher, particularly in the area of stick control. Joe Morello was a student of George Lawrence Stone, the author of the book “Stick Control For The Modern Drummer.’

Using the stick control techniques Dave taught me, I quickly improved my stick control, and placed first in 2 drumming contests, winning over 70 other drummers in each contest.
I eventually became a drum teacher myself. I’ve successfully taught many hundreds of students the stick control techniques presented here in this course. Some went on to become professional drummers. One of my students, Matthew Lam, learned the techniques I teach in this course so well that he won a fastest hands drumming contest – 2 years in a row!
The Need For A Stick Control Course
There have been some great books written about developing stick control. But there were 2 basic problems I identified with these books.
The first problem I had with stick control books was that they contained too many of the same type of exercises. They also completely left out other types of exercises that are crucial in learning stick control. An example of this is that some of these books contain absolutely no accent exercises.
The second problem is that while they contained lots of exercises there was almost no explanation of how to practice the exercises. There was nothing about finding the fulcrum, the balance point on the stick. There was nothing about how to develop finger technique. And there was even nothing about how to hold the sticks efficiently. A book can’t really teach these things effectively. For that you usually need someone to actually demonstrate the correct motions for you. These are the reasons why I created this stick control course.
Alternatives To My Stick Control Course
I’ll be honest. There are other ways to learn the stick control techniques I teach in this course. You could study with a private teacher. I personally charge $100 per month for lessons. Many teachers charge much more.
You could go to a university and study percussion like I did. At the University Of Missouri where I live the total cost for a 4 year degree is $53,682. That’s for students who live in Missouri. If you come to Missouri as an out of state student it’s $141.526.
You could also join an online drumming membership site. Most range from $240 to $270 per year.
Any of these programs might help you. Or they might not. Personally I had a terrible experience in college. There are lots of people teaching with great credentials. Some of these are good teachers. But many of the great players are not good teachers, even the famous ones. Drumming was so easy for them that they sometimes have a hard time explaining what they do to a student.
I’ve Taught Many Hundreds Of Students Over A Period Of 20 Years. Here Are Some Of The Results…
I began working with Kevin Walters when he was a Freshman in High School. He told me his goal was to make snare drum on his High School drumline. Using the exercises and principles I teach in this stick control course, Kevin did make the drumline. He eventually went on to become the 1st. student in Kansas University history to make snare drum on the drumline as a Freshman.
“Brad worked as a drum teacher for my son from the ages from 11-16. Brad encouraged my son day by day at each lesson, the encouragement resulted in the constant addition of new skills and great competence, Brad encouraged him to play in many different styles and situations and provided opportunities that allowed him to stretch himself out of his comfort zone in many situations. In outside situations my son was not required to “try out” due to his well-known skills. I would recommend Brad’s teaching expertise to anyone interested in learning drums or continuing to expand their skills.” Ed Feltman, Olathe, KS
Matthew Lam first came to study with me in the 5th grade. He was a very conscientious student, with great attention to detail. After studying and practicing the concepts I teach in this stick control course, Matthew won a fastest hands drumming contest 2 years in a row!
Zach Forsyth was one of the most outstanding students I ever had the privilege to teach. Using the concepts taught in this stick control course Zach became the section leader on his high school drumline, He also achieve first chair for Kansas All State Band. He went on to study with Ed Soph at North Texas University. He became a professional jazz drummer and toured China with Trumpeter Li Xiaochuan.
Reviews Of This Course
Great course!! Delivers what you need to know.
For me this course covered everything I needed in order to begin playing drums, and also meanwhile I feel that I am building a solid foundation of knowledge, practice tools, and fun exercises. It took little effort for me to understand and keep moving forward in the course. The results have left me very inspired. I look forward to more tools and videos as they become available through Brad’s teachings.
The course is exceptionally well-paced.
Brad is an excellent teacher. He breaks things down to the basics and seems to meet students where they are. This course was particularly beneficial because he got us playing on our sets right off the bat — not that there is anything wrong with practice pads, but it’s a lot easier to ENGAGE in the learning process when you feel like you are actually DRUMMING. On another note (excuse the pun!), Brad is very conscientious about answering questions, and from a student’s perspective that is very much appreciated.
Technique
Another great exercise for me to improve my weak left hand matched grip! I can keep up w/rt hand the first two demo speeds. But can only keep up with the first left/matched grip demonstration speed. So, am working on that, we will see what happens. I believe/know in time it will improve…
All Good!
Man, I’m telling you…. This course is Just Great for me. It is concise and to the point for one to improve their drumming/hand sticking chops! I’ve have been skipping around and working on all the drills & exercises, and thoroughly Enjoy the workouts & my hands are feeling better and better! It is very cool to experience the improvement I’m feeling.
Terrific drumming hand & speed/control instruction to be Had!
This course is perfect & terrific for me! I do have some basic drumming skills I would say, however, I can tell you… Lol, they need a ton of refinement (shall we say)! I have gone thru most of the drills & exercises in this course presented by Brad Allen, and they all get right to the point of how to improve Our drumming/hand skills chops! I do have the patience to apply my self to practice & work on my stick control, speed, and other great drumming lessons that are presented by Brad. I have been applying myself to this ‘Killer’ course for about 2 weeks now, and am already seeing & feeling improvement. One last thing, … besides explaining the lessons/drills very well, Brad also Demonstrates them in a super good way by example of him playing the exercises & drill’s, which help me a lot, to see them & attempt & practice playing along with him. So I Do recommend this course highly!!
Response from BRAD ALLEN DRUMS
Thanks for the great review Vince! You brought up an important point too. You have the patience and discipline to apply the things you are learning in the course. That’s what really makes the difference.

Bonuses With My Course
You receive a step by step guide for developing your stick control (This is the type of thing I normal create for my private students, paying me $100 or $1200 a year for lessons. But it’s included with this course.)
- This means you will know what to practice each week. You will have a clear plan of action.
- This will help you to make the quickest progress possible.
- This will keep you from wasting thousands of hours and years of practice time to get the results you want.
You receive downloads of all exercises in the course. (You could instead buy 3-4 books on stick control at $15 a piece. This would cost you $45-$60. But as I mentioned earlier, there is a lot of repetition and wasted time in these books. In my course all exercises are included.)
- This will allow you to quickly re-access the exercises to practice at your convenience.
- These can be placed on your practice stand away from your computer, again for your convenience.
- This will save you practice time as you won’t have to go looking for the exercise. This will result in more consistent practice and quicker progress.
You will receive personal help with your stick control from me. (As I mentioned earlier I usually charge $100 per month or $1200 per year for lessons. But this is included with the course)
- I’m much more available than most of the famous teachers out there because I work with a small number of students. I don’t have 100,000 people or more enrolled in my course.
- You don’t have go through the entire course alone.
- You’ll have a very experienced teacher to help you if you get stuck or have questions, a teacher with over 20 years of experience teaching private students rather than just performing on the drums.
P.S. Where will your stick control be 6 months from now if you don’t change the way you approach practicing? Probably about the same as it is today.
If you don’t invest Killer Stick Control In 30 Minutes A Day, can you guarantee that your stick technique will start to be on the level of the drummers you admire? Don’t waste another minute doing the same thing you’ve always been doing. Your drumming talent deserves better. YOU deserve better.
P.P.S. I truly believe in my course as I have seen it open peoples’ eyes and start practicing much more effectively. I want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase!
Common Questions About The Course
I have found through over 20 years of teaching and practicing that the number of exercises does not increase your effectiveness or progress when it comes to drumstick technique. We’re not trying to master exercises. We are trying to master specific techniques used in controlling the sticks. In order to do that, I have found that it’s easier to focus on fewer exercises.
Yes! My goal is to provide the best course on stick control I possibly can. It will be updated as I get feedback and see the need to add exercises, more videos for clarification, etc. And all those updates are included for life when you join the course.
