The most common drum beat in popular music, including rock, country, etc., is an 8th note rock beat.
Start by playing the 8th notes we learned in the last lesson on the high hat with your right hand. Use your left hand to play the snare drum on 2 and 4. So on 2 and 4, you are hitting both the snare drum and high hat on 2 and 4.
Next play 8th notes on the hi-hat with your right hand, and play the bass on 1 and 3. On 1 and 3 your bass drum and hi-hat will hit at the same time. Leave out the snare drum for now.
Finally we’ll put it all together. Here is a basic 8th note rock beat. Play the 8th notes on the hi-hat with your right hand. Play the bass drum on 1 and 3, and the snare drum on 2 and 4.
