The Ultimate Beginning Drum Course!

Are you brand new to drumming and unsure where to start? Are you overwhelmed by the endless drum lesson videos on YouTube? Then this course is for you! The Ultimate Beginning Drum Course is designed to take you from complete beginner to playing along with your favorite songs in the shortest time possible.

I spent over 20 years teaching drums privately. I found that were lots of great books and resources available for very advanced drummers. I always struggled though to find good resources for beginning drummers. Most of them were either very difficult or just really boring. That’s why I created this course—to give you a clear, fun, and effective way to learn the drums.

What Is The Ultimate Beginning Drum Course?

This step-by-step online video course follows the same proven methods I’ve used with my students for decades. By following my structured approach, you’ll go from absolute beginner to confidently playing along with some of your favorite songs in just a few weeks—without wasting time on inefficient practice.

I am a bit unique as a drum teacher as I play multiple instruments. The drums are my primary instrument, but I also play guitar, bass and piano. In my private lessons, I often play these instruments with the student I’m teaching. This is much more fun than just playing exercises out of a book!

Since I can’t be with you physically through this course to play one of those other instruments with you I’ve tried to do the next best thing. I’ve created play along tracks so you can play along with me in the comfort of your home. I kept these play along tracks very simple – perfect for beginning drummers. You can also slow them down or speed them up just like we would do in a private lesson.

I’ve also recorded several different tracks to play along with that you’ll find similar to some very well-known tunes. These include Beverly Hills by Weezer, Louie Louie, Taking Care of Business and more. I’m really excited to help you on your drumming Journey so let’s get started!

  • In this course I’ve kept reading drum music down to the bare necessities. This makes it much easier to understand than most beginning drum resources.
  • I’ve kept the information on stick technique down to a minimum as well. Many teachers and books get very hung up on this subject with beginning students. But in the beginning it’s better to start with just a basic understanding of stick technique. This way you can start playing the drum set immediately, rather than spending months or weeks practicing on a snare drum or practice pad.
  • You will have the ability to contact me personally if you get stuck or have questions
  • You’ll have lifetime access to the course

What Exactly Will I Learn In This Course?

  • You’ll learn to play 7 basic rock beats on the drums, and then play them with a band!😁
  • How to play 5 popular songs on on the drums.😁
  • You’ll learn how and why drum beats work with specific songs. This will help enable you to learn other songs on the drums.
  • You’ll learn what drum fills are and you’ll learn some beginning fills. And you’ll play those with a band as well.
  • Along the way, you’ll learn some of the basics all beginning drummers need to know – like basic music notation for drums.
  • So you’ll quickly learn how to read drum music, including quarter notes and 8th notes, using a simple explanation and a couple of quick exercises. This will open up doors to learning more and more things on the instrument.
  • Along with learning to read, we’ll talk about a little bit of music theory. You’ll learn what 4/4 and common time are, and how to count in these time signatures.
  • You’ll learn beginning stick control and technique – just the amount you need to start playing the drum set.
  • I’ll also show you the things you need to know about drum equipment, exactly what you need to purchase to get started right.
  • Then you’ll learn how to set up your drum set efficiently which will make it easier to play.
  • I’m much more available than most of the famous teachers out there because I work with a small number of students. I don’t have 100,000 people or more enrolled in my course.
  • You don’t have go through the entire course alone.
  • You’ll have a very experienced teacher to help you if you get stuck or have questions, a teacher with over 20 years of experience teaching private students rather than just performing on the drums.

Common Myths About Learning To Play The Drums

There are several common myths when it comes to playing the drums. The first is that you have to start very young. This simply isn’t true. I could tell you all kinds of stories of adults who learned to play the drums. Some of these were young adults, and others were senior citizens. any reasonably healthy adult can learn to play the drums. And it’s just as much fun as an adult as it is as as a kid!

Another myth is that unless you devote many, many hours to it you’ll never learn to play. It doesn’t take as many hours to learn the basics as you think. You can get a lot done in just 30 minutes a day. The important thing is consistency. You’ll make quick progress if you practice daily, or at least most days.

A third myth is that being good at the drums is simply a matter of the number of hours or years you spend at it. But again this really isn’t true. It’s practicing the right things that creates improvement on the drums, not just the amount you practice. Drum students how know how to practice efficiently for 30 minutes a day make much more progress than those practicing hours a day inefficiently.

Who Am I?

Just in case you’re new to Brad Allen Drums, I’m a professional drummer based out of Kansas City. After spending almost 8 years as a drummer in the U.S. Army Band, I left all that behind to pursue my dreams of leading my own band and performing with world class jazz musicians.

I also began to teach private drum lessons to students in the area. Over the past 20 years, I’ve taught many hundreds of students to play the instrument. Some went on to become professional drummers. One of my students, Matthew Lam, learned the techniques I teach in this course so well that he won a fastest hands drumming contest – 2 years in a row!

Alternatives To My Beginning Drum Course

I’ll be honest. There are other ways to learn the things I teach in this course.

You can learn on YouTube. I love YouTube and create lots of videos there. But YouTube is actually a better tool for drummers who already know how to play the drums, at least to a certain degree. When you first get started you have no idea what you’re even looking for. As a result, beginning drummers waste many hours searching for answers and trying to decide what direction to go next. They also waste many hours practicing things they simply aren’t ready for, or things they really don’t need to learn anyway.

You could study with a private teacher. I personally charge $100 per month for lessons. Many teachers charge much more.

You could go to a university and study percussion like I did. At the University Of Missouri where I live the total cost for a 4 year degree is $53,682. That’s for students who live in Missouri. If you come to Missouri as an out of state student it’s $141.526.

You could also join an online drumming membership site. Most range from $240 to $270 per year.

Any of these programs might help you. Or they might not. Personally I had some terrible experiences with private teachers. There are lots of people teaching who have great credentials. Some of these are good teachers. But many of the great players are not good teachers, even the famous ones. Drumming was so easy for them that they sometimes have a hard time explaining what they do to a student.

I’ve Taught Many Hundreds Of Students Over A Period Of 20 Years. Here Are Some Of The Results…

I began working with Kevin Walters when he was a Freshman in High School. He told me his goal was to make snare drum on his High School drumline. Using the exercises and principles I teach in this stick control course, Kevin did make the drumline. He eventually went on to become the 1st. student in Kansas University history to make snare drum on the drumline as a Freshman.

“Brad worked as a drum teacher for my son from the ages from 11-16. Brad encouraged my son day by day at each lesson, the encouragement resulted in the constant addition of new skills and great competence, Brad encouraged him to play in many different styles and situations and provided opportunities that allowed him to stretch himself out of his comfort zone in many situations. In outside situations my son was not required to “try out” due to his well-known skills. I would recommend Brad’s teaching expertise to anyone interested in learning drums or continuing to expand their skills.”   Ed Feltman, Olathe, KS

Matthew Lam first came to study with me in the 5th grade. He was a very conscientious student, with great attention to detail. After studying and practicing the concepts I teach in this stick control course, Matthew won a fastest hands drumming contest 2 years in a row!

Zach Forsyth was one of the most outstanding students I ever had the privilege to teach. Using the concepts taught in this stick control course Zach became the section leader on his high school drumline, He also achieve first chair for Kansas All State Band. He went on to study with Ed Soph at North Texas University. He became a professional jazz drummer and toured China with Trumpeter Li Xiaochuan.

For me this course covered everything I needed in order to begin playing drums, and also meanwhile I feel that I am building a solid foundation of knowledge, practice tools, and fun exercises. It took little effort for me to understand and keep moving forward in the course. The results have left me very inspired. I look forward to more tools and videos as they become available through Brad’s teachings.

Thank you! I appreciate your feedback. I will be adding more to the course soon. I’ll let you know when those additional lessons are available.

The course is exceptionally well-paced.

Brad is an excellent teacher. He breaks things down to the basics and seems to meet students where they are. This course was particularly beneficial because he got us playing on our sets right off the bat — not that there is anything wrong with practice pads, but it’s a lot easier to ENGAGE in the learning process when you feel like you are actually DRUMMING. On another note (excuse the pun!), Brad is very conscientious about answering questions, and from a student’s perspective that is very much appreciated.
